- "The woman lays the wreath upon her intended... which I do recall... which represents his sovereignty... And he drinks of her wine. And then there's a dance, with a joining of hands. The marriage ceremony of the Triumph settlers. You, sir, are a newlywed."
- ― Book, in "Our Mrs. Reynolds"
Triumph is a tiny planet in orbit around Heinlein. The world has become a refuge for those who want nothing to do with modern life. The settlers here live like the Amish folk of Earth-That-Was, using very little advanced technology and following their own customs. Thugs and bandits find the settlements easy pickings, since the people are pacifists. The people of Triumph sometimes arrange with bands of mercenaries to protect them.
In one of the towns the young girls are raised in a convent know as the Maiden House, where they are trained to be subservient and respond to a man's needs. They are even married off in trade, which is a form of currency for those who have little else in way of trade.
